The Top 5 Things I Love About My Environmental Consulting Career

At EnviroLearn we often talk to professionals just starting in the environmental consulting field. I love sharing the details of my career because it’s been so fulfilling for me. It’s hard to pick the “top 5” reasons I love being an environmental consultant, but as I sat down and reflected on 25 years in the field, I think these are the facets of this work that I’ve enjoyed most:

Variety.  It’s the spice of life, right? It’s also a characteristic of environmental consulting that keeps things fresh. I am usually working on multiple projects every week or even every day. Or I might be working on Project A for several days (or even weeks) in a row, but I’m working on multiple tasks for that same project, such as analyzing groundwater results, researching background information, or preparing the report.

It's not just science. I have a confession. I’m a science geek, but I’m also a writing nerd and I love research. Environmental consulting involves science, writing, research, math and statistics, communicating with stakeholders, and so much more. I’m even fond of the math and statistics concepts that seemed so confusing when I was in school.

Informing and guiding.  A major part of consulting is communicating our findings to clients and stakeholders so that they can make informed decisions. I am often called upon by my clients to provide guidance on processes, regulations, or environmental concepts. I love the feeling of accomplishment when I’ve helped a client obtain regulatory approval on a project or determine the remediation approach that they will use.

Learning.  As a consultant, I am always learning. For example, I might be learning a new technical approach to mitigating contamination or the history of a site.  Most of my consulting career has been spent in northeast Ohio and I love it when I’m driving somewhere and see several places where I have worked on projects.

Out of the office. This might be the number one thing that I love about my profession!  I get out of the office to meet clients or stakeholders, or to conduct site visits or field work.  My favorite site visits have been of historic buildings and undeveloped wooded properties. I have non-profit clients that request assessments of undeveloped property for conservation – how great is it when a walk in the woods is part of the job!
